Quick answer: an SEO MCP server is a small service that lets an AI assistant — Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code — call an SEO tool directly, using the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Instead of copying numbers between tabs, you ask the assistant "what blocks GPTBot on our site?" or "what is our visibility for this keyword?" and it runs the tool and answers from the result. In 2026 the main SEO vendors ship one: Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking and DataForSEO all have official servers, all behind a paid plan or a prepaid balance. Google has none for Search Console. SeeGeo's server is the one that checks the thing the others don't — whether AI engines can read and recommend your site — and it needs no account for a first look: https://see-geo.com/mcp/anonymous.
This guide is for the owner or marketer who keeps seeing "MCP" and wants to know whether it is for them. It covers what the protocol is, what an SEO server actually does, the servers worth knowing, how to add one to each assistant in a few clicks, and the limits nobody puts in the launch post.
What is an MCP server?
MCP is the Model Context Protocol, an open standard Anthropic published in November 2024 and that OpenAI, Google, Microsoft and Cursor adopted during 2025. It defines how an AI assistant discovers and calls tools that live outside the model. An MCP server is the piece that offers the tools; the assistant is the client. Claude's web app calls these servers "connectors", ChatGPT calls them "apps and connectors", Cursor and VS Code call them MCP servers. Same thing.
Before MCP, giving an assistant access to a tool meant a custom integration per assistant. After it, a vendor writes one server and every client can use it, and you add it by pasting a URL. That is why the phrase "MCP server" went from zero to more than 13,000 Google searches a month inside a year (one vendor's count), and why the 50 most searched servers pull over 600,000 searches a month worldwide (Ahrefs data via MCP Manager). The big names are developer tools — Playwright, Figma, GitHub. SEO is a smaller, newer corner of the same shift.
A server can be remote (a URL, hosted by the vendor, often with a sign-in step) or local (a program running on your machine, usually from npm). Remote is what claude.ai and ChatGPT want. Local is what developers run inside Claude Code or Cursor.
What an SEO MCP server actually does
It exposes the vendor's data as a handful of named tools. A keyword tool takes a phrase and returns volume and difficulty. A rank tool takes a domain and returns positions. A backlink tool returns referring domains. A site-audit tool crawls and returns findings. The assistant decides which tool to call from what you asked, calls it, and writes the answer from the returned data instead of from memory.
The practical change is the loop. Until now an assistant could talk about SEO; it could not measure. With a server connected, the same chat can measure, suggest a change, make the change if it has your files, and measure again. The three things people use it for most:
- Questions with a real answer. "Which of our pages lost positions this month?" becomes a tool call and a table, not an essay.
- Checks before a change. "Can AI crawlers still read the site after we added the firewall?" takes seconds and prevents the outage you would otherwise find next quarter.
- Reports without the export step. "Compare our visibility with these three competitors" is four calls and one summary.
The SEO MCP servers worth knowing in 2026
The honest version of every "best SEO MCP servers" list is that there is no single best: each server is a window onto one vendor's data, so you connect the ones whose data you already pay for, plus the one or two that cover what those do not. The table is what each one is for and what it costs to get in. Prices move; treat them as the order of magnitude and read the vendor's page before paying.
| Server | What it covers | What it takes to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs (docs) | Keywords, backlinks, organic traffic, site audit — the full Ahrefs dataset, several dozen tools, configurable | Lite plan or higher (about $129/month) and API units per call |
| Semrush (docs) | Organic research, keyword research, backlinks; Trends with the Trends API | An SEO Business plan with the API package, or a Trends API subscription |
| SE Ranking | Keyword research, rank tracking, backlinks, audits in one connection | A paid plan or a pay-as-you-go API balance; a 14-day trial exists |
| DataForSEO | Raw SERP pages, keyword data, backlinks, AI Overviews — the data the other tools are built on | Prepaid balance, pay per call; the server is open source |
| Google Search Console | Your own search queries, clicks, URL inspection | No official server from Google; community servers run locally against your Google Cloud credentials |
| Google Analytics | Your GA4 reports | Google's own open-source server, run locally with your credentials |
| SeeGeo (details) | AI visibility: can GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot read the site, and does the site give AI engines what they need to recommend it — a graded audit with fixes | Nothing for a first look (/mcp/anonymous); a free account for the full server, 10 audits a month |
Two things the table hides. First, every paid server bills per call on top of the plan, so an assistant that is allowed to loop can spend real money; set a budget in the vendor's dashboard before you connect. Second, none of the classic SEO servers measure what AI engines do with your site. Rankings, backlinks and volumes describe Google's old game. Whether ChatGPT's crawler is blocked by your robots.txt, whether the page it fetches is readable once the JavaScript is stripped, whether there is structured data naming the business — that is the newer question, and it is the one SeeGeo's server answers.
How to add an MCP server to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or VS Code
The steps below use SeeGeo's server as the example because it needs no key for the first call. Any remote server works the same way; swap the URL.
claude.ai and the Claude desktop app. Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector. Name it, paste https://see-geo.com/mcp, and click Add. Claude discovers the sign-in, sends you to a consent page, and from then on the tools are available in any chat where the connector is switched on. SeeGeo's developers page has a one-click link that opens this dialog pre-filled.
ChatGPT. Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced → turn on Developer mode → Create. Paste the server URL and choose OAuth. MCP connectors are available on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu — not on the free tier — and on team plans an admin may need to enable them first.
Cursor. Open the server's install link from the vendor (SeeGeo's is on /developers; it adds the server to Cursor with one click) or add it under Settings → MCP with the URL. SeeGeo is also in the Cursor plugin directory.
VS Code and GitHub Copilot. Same pattern: the vendor's install link, or add a server of type http with the URL in the MCP settings.
Claude Code and any other client. One line in the terminal:
claude mcp add --transport http seegeo https://see-geo.com/mcp/anonymous
The no-account endpoint gives you unlimited crawler checks and one full audit per day. For more, create a free account, take an API key from the account page and point the client at https://see-geo.com/mcp with that key, or run the server locally with npx seegeo-mcp. The package is MIT-licensed and listed in the official MCP registry as com.see-geo/seegeo.
Then ask something. Three prompts that show what a server changes:
- "Run
crawler_checkon example.com. Which AI crawlers are blocked and by what?" - "Audit example.com and list the three findings with the biggest effect on the grade, with the fix for each."
- "Audit us and our two main competitors. On which category do we lose, and what would it take to catch up?"
The limits, honestly
The assistant can still make numbers up. A connected tool reduces this; it does not remove it. If a figure matters, ask the assistant to show the tool's raw result. Every SeeGeo tool returns both readable text and structured data for exactly this reason.
Pay-per-call means pay-per-loop. An agent told to "keep checking until the score improves" will keep checking. Prefer servers with a free tier for the cheap checks and a visible monthly cap for the rest.
Read-only is the right default. A server that can only read your data cannot break your site. None of the servers above write to your site; the assistant does that, if you give it your files. Keep it that way until you trust the loop.
Consent is per client. When you connect a vendor's server through claude.ai or ChatGPT, the vendor issues that client its own credential. On SeeGeo that credential appears on your account page named after the client — "Claude (connector)" — and revoking it there disconnects that client and nothing else.
MCP support in ChatGPT is still labelled beta. It works, and it changes month to month. If a step above does not match what you see, the vendor's own help page is the source of truth.
Where to start
If you already pay for Ahrefs, Semrush or SE Ranking, connect that server first: it is the data you know, in the place you now work. Then add the one check the classic tools do not make. The no-account endpoint takes a minute to add and returns a graded answer to the question that matters most in 2026 — can the AI engines read you, and would they recommend you — and the free audit on the site gives the same answer without connecting anything.
Frequently asked questions
What is MCP in SEO? MCP is the Model Context Protocol, the open standard that lets AI assistants call external tools. "MCP in SEO" means an SEO tool packaged as such a server, so that Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor can run keyword, ranking, backlink, audit or AI-visibility checks inside the chat and answer from the real data.
Is there a free SEO MCP server? Yes. SeeGeo's no-account endpoint gives unlimited AI-crawler checks and one full audit per day; a free account raises that to ten audits a month. Google Analytics' own server is free to run with your credentials, and the community Search Console servers are free software, though they need a Google Cloud setup. The large SEO vendors' servers sit behind paid plans.
Do I need to be a developer to use one? Not for the remote servers. Adding a connector to claude.ai or ChatGPT is a settings page and a URL. Local servers run from npm or Docker and are a developer task.
Does ChatGPT support MCP servers? Yes, as connectors, on paid plans (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu) with developer mode turned on. The free tier does not have them. ChatGPT only connects to remote HTTPS servers, not to programs on your own machine.
MCP server, API or Custom GPT — which should I use? The API is for code you write. A Custom GPT works only inside ChatGPT and needs an OpenAPI description. An MCP server works in every assistant from one URL and is the option to pick when a human will be asking the questions in chat.
Can an MCP server see my data? Only what you sign in to. A vendor's server reads that vendor's data for your account. SeeGeo's server reads public websites and your own audit history; it cannot see other accounts, change your plan or delete anything, and the credential it holds is listed and revocable on your account page.
