GEO audit: see how AI search engines see your website
Quick answer: a GEO audit checks whether ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google can find, read, understand and cite your site — and tells you what to fix, in order of impact. SeeGeo runs one in about 20 seconds, free, no signup to see your score.
What does a GEO audit check?
Six things, in the order an AI crawler meets them. Each is a category in the report with its own score and ranked findings.
- Crawler access — sixteen search and AI crawlers tested one by one against your robots.txt, plus the CDN and firewall rules that block bots without touching that file.
- Technical foundation — HTTPS, redirects, mobile readiness, speed; read without JavaScript, because most AI crawlers don't run it.
- Structured data — the Organization, Product and FAQ markup that tells machines what you are in a form they can't misread.
- Content extractability — answer-first openings, question-shaped headings, real numbers, cited sources: what research shows gets lifted into AI answers.
- Off-site presence — consistent name and contact details, and presence in the knowledge bases AI systems consult before repeating a claim.
- Entity clarity — whether a machine can tell what your business does from your homepage alone. If our classifier can't, an AI assistant can't either — and the report says so.
The full rubric is public: how we score AI visibility and the measurement methodology.
What does an AI visibility audit measure?
An AI visibility audit measures whether an AI assistant could find, read, understand and cite your website — six categories, each scored 0–100: crawler access, technical foundation, structured data, content extractability, off-site presence, and entity clarity. The grade is the weighted combination, anchored to how 107 real small-business sites scored, so an A means the top decile of real sites rather than an arbitrary threshold. The free check at /ai-crawler-check runs the access category on its own if that is all you need.
GEO audit vs. SEO audit
| SEO audit | GEO audit | |
|---|---|---|
| Question it answers | Can Google rank this page? | Would an AI assistant read and cite it? |
| Crawlers it cares about | Googlebot, Bingbot | GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended — and the search bots |
| JavaScript | Rendered, like Google does | Not executed, like most AI crawlers |
| Content test | Keywords, links, authority | Is there a liftable answer in the first sentences? Numbers? Sources? |
| Off-site signal | Backlinks | Entity presence: Wikipedia, Wikidata, consistent citations |
| What a good score means | You can rank | You can be the answer |
They overlap — strong SEO gets you into the retrieval pool; GEO gets you cited from it. See SEO vs GEO: the difference.
What you get from SeeGeo's GEO audit
- A grade (A–F) anchored to real sites — an A means the top tenth of 107 small-business websites we measured and published.
- Six category scores and every finding ranked by impact, each with its exact fix in plain language.
- A crawler-by-crawler access table: who can read your site and who is blocked.
- An “AI reads your site” panel — what a language model understood from your homepage and what it couldn't tell.
- Honesty built in: an unreachable domain gets no grade rather than a fake F, a firewall that blocks our crawler is explained rather than scored, and a well-known site that blocks AI on purpose is told so before the grade.
Frequently asked questions
What is a GEO audit?
A GEO (generative engine optimization) audit checks whether AI search engines — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI features — can find, read, understand and cite your website. It covers crawler access, technical foundation, structured data, how quotable your content is, off-site presence, and whether a machine can tell what your business is.
How is a GEO audit different from an SEO audit?
An SEO audit asks whether Google can rank your pages. A GEO audit asks whether an AI assistant would read and cite them when answering a customer's question — which depends on crawler permissions most SEO tools ignore, on text being readable without JavaScript, and on whether your pages open with liftable answers and cited sources.
How long does a GEO audit take?
SeeGeo's GEO audit crawls your homepage and up to about eight pages the way an AI crawler does and returns a graded report in roughly 20 seconds. Tracking whether AI assistants actually mention you over time is a separate, scheduled measurement.
Is the GEO audit free?
Yes. The audit is free and you see your score, category breakdown and crawler table without creating an account. The detailed fix for each finding is unlocked with a free email sign-in; paid plans add scheduled tracking across engines.
What does an AI visibility audit measure?
Six things: whether AI crawlers can reach your pages (robots.txt and firewalls), the technical basics they need (speed, clean URLs, no JavaScript-only text), structured data that names what you are, how quotable your content is (answer-first openings, question headings, dates, sources), your off-site presence (Wikipedia, Wikidata, mentions), and whether a machine can tell what kind of business you are. Each is scored 0–100 and combined into one grade.
How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
Be readable, be plain, and be cited. Let the AI crawlers in (robots.txt and your CDN), state what you do and where in the first sentence of your homepage, answer the questions customers ask under question-shaped headings with FAQ markup, and get named on the sites assistants already cite for your category — directories, reviews, local press. The audit tells you which of these you are missing.
How is the GEO audit score calculated?
Deterministically — fixed rules and parsing, no language model in the score. Grades are anchored to the score distribution of 107 real small-business websites we audited and published: an A is the top decile of real sites. The engine is versioned with a public changelog, so a changed grade always traces to either your site changing or the ruler changing.
Ready? The audit takes about 20 seconds.
